Molham Shelter for 1000 Displaced Families

Molham Shelter for 1000 Displaced Families

15 October 2022

Throughout the years of our work in the humanitarian field, we never stopped feeling distressed by the sight of camps and makeshift tents. We spent hours and days thinking about an alternative to this drastic situation forced upon displaced families, and multiplying their hardships. It goes without saying that families living in tents are left with no protection from weather conditions like rain and storms, and their children are more susceptible to diseases due to unsanitary conditions. Just over the last the few months, more than 850,000 civilians in northern Syria were displaced from their homes. Not only did these people lose their homes, past lives, and livelihoods, but also they lost hope for a better future, as they try to get used to living in dire humanitarian conditions.

In view of this, on mid-February 2020, we finally launched ‘Molham Shelter: 1000 Housing Units’ project, through which donors can fund housing units by making a $300 donation. The walls of the housing units are made of concrete blocks and the roof consists of insulating sheets. The implementation of the project was divided into four phases, two of which have been completed, where 250 families were housed in such units.

The chosen project sites are areas near the Syrian-Turkish border, as well as Azaz city, given their relative security. These housing units have a tremendous impact on the quality of life of the beneficiary families. While there is a long way ahead of us, we hope to reach the day where not one tent is left in northern Syria. Until then, we will continue working to achieve this objective to the best of our ability.

The details of the project’s four phases are as follows:

First phase (completed):

Area: Barisha village, Idlib, northwestern Syria

Target beneficiaries: Newly displaced widows from Kafranbel town, Idlib

Number of housing units: 126

Second phase (completed):

Area: Barisha village, Idlib, northwestern Syria

Target beneficiaries: Newly displaced widows from Kafranbel town, Idlib

Number of housing units: 121

Third phase (ongoing):

Area: Tur Laha village, Idlib, northern Syria

Number of housing units: 176

Fourth phase (ongoing):

Number of housing units: 500

The following are two models of the housing units from the above-mentioned completed phases:

  • Housing unit model 1 (area: 32 m2)
  • Housing unit model 2 (area: 24 m2)
