In 2013, the city was subjected to a large-scale military assault that led to massive destruction, forced displacement, and the emptying of neighborhoods and farmland. Despite the siege and bombardment, the people of Al-Qusair resisted with extraordinary courage, losing thousands of loved ones and enduring years of hardship. Homes were destroyed, orchards were wiped out, and the city was turned into a closed military zone where families were prevented from returning for more than ten years. On December 8, 2024, the people of Al-Qusair finally returned to their hometown after it was reopened. What they found was heartbreaking: a city with ruined infrastructure, no electricity, no clean water, no schools, and land that had not been cultivated for years. From this devastation, hope was born again through “Fajr al-Qusair” — a volunteer, community-led crowdfunding initiative created by the city’s people to rebuild what was destroyed: ✅ restoring schools and education ✅ reviving healthcare services ✅ repairing basic infrastructure ✅ supporting displaced families returning home Al-Qusair today stands as a living symbol of resilience — proof that even after destruction and displacement, a city can rise again through the strength of its people.
