Barakat suffered greatly from the earthquake in 2023, as he lost his family and home due to the disaster, and his leg was amputated as a result. He now lives in a shelter with his son.
Currently, he has lost most of his sight, making it impossible for his son to leave him alone to go to work. They have been borrowing money to cover their basic living expenses, and the amount they owe has become extremely large, making it difficult for them to re-pay.
